Welcome to Newark.pbwiki, a metronewark.org project. When I first arrived in Newark in 1977, I couldn't hide  my tears of disappointment for I perceived Newark as the ugliest city I had laid eyes on! Buildings were falling apart, holes on the streets, ugly residential houses... nothing I had dreamed of a city in the US, especially coming from an area in Africa and Europe where new buildings, wide avenues with flowers in the middle, choreographed colors from house to house were the norm. Suddenly I felt the urge to move away as quickly as I could. And so I did! I spent the 80's very far away from Newark. As time went by I started to really understand the American culture, and a new love for Newark emerged from within. Its history began to " grow" in me and suddenly I felt the urge of moving back to Newark and embrace diversity! As I understood all the metamorphoses Newark had suffered over the centuries, I fell in love with her and never, ever left Newark again. I started my own business and volunteered my spare time to the community. My journey as a resident of Newark is not finished yet, I feel there is a lot more to discover about this very special place. This wiki is a repository of some of my findings in an effort to better understand Newark. I hope it may help someone else that shares the same burning desire to know more... a discovery exercise for myself and for those who wish to participate and share. I'm in the process of developing a page structure and once such layout is established I will open participation permissions for those willing to share their research about Newark, its people and its neighborhoods. Comments are welcome (please see contact link at the bottom of the page). If you email me photos or texts, I will be glad to include them here. Please include the source of information to aid those wanting to further explore your subject of interest. This site joins many other sites that currently bring Newark's history to the web (and there are many good ones already). If you wish, you can also join our blog system at  metronewark.org/articles  and write from there. My purpose is to honor our past as we look at the present and  future of our community. This site is about people with special interest in the Lenape struggle and reasons why Newark is what it has become. By Newark I mean metronewark, a radius far beyond the city limits. Join me to help create a wiki full of resources and a takeoff ramp to other sites already on the net. For those who have come before me and left a legacy of information on the web already, it has been a honor to know, visit, and read your sites. Our interests vibrate in the same frequency and it feels really good knowing that there are others out there that share the same burning desire! I hope to meet some of you one day. ta
